The preflight inspection of the airplane done by the copilot (and occasionally by an enlightened captain--though virtually never on a cold, sleety night)to verify everything is as it should be. It is not a detailed, maintenance-type inspection but one to catch the obviously out-of-place condition affecting the safety of flight.
